Fiction Writing Rama's primary interest was in studying how old values in traditional societies evolved and adjusted to the impact of modernization. All of them, albeit obliquely, refer to the quest for education in conservative middle-class homes and the handicaps of poverty in satisfying that quest. Through the sacrifices of his entire family, the boy works his way up from abject poverty and the bondage of caste laws to the greater promise of the university.

When he complains about this to his mother, she says: "We are poor, my child. And if the rich laugh at us, let them. These are small things. You can't give up a chance like this because for a while you are hurt. After all, you are the first boy in this village to go to a proper school. Everyone here is already talking about you.

In another instance, Keshav's mother replies to his father when he learns about her working as a common labourer breaking the stones. He finds it humiliating that she is made to work while he, the man of the house, is sitting at home because of his illness.

After all, aren't all the women in the villages working? Do you think they sit back in their huts and have maids to wait on them? The only difference is that I do one kind of work and they another, but all of us have to work. It was national recognition of the book as an authentic portrayal of a time when purdah was the prevalent way of life in middle-class homes.

Alas, Rama had already passed away the previous year, and did not live to see this recognition bestowed on her. This book has been reprinted many times, translated into French and even into Urdu.
