A flat surface of black charcoal is the raw material of his drawings, and an eraser, the implement delineating each form. Like a sculptor removing material, he excavates memories from his past and gives form to images from his dreams. Renowned internationally for his innovative mastery of clay sculpture, the artist also invested a drawing and painting practice.
With charcoal and clay predominating, his work eludes the specificities of period and culture.
Biography. Prior to joining Concordia, Jean-Pierre
Larocque draws by subtraction and sculpts through an accumulation of materials and textures. Jean-Pierre Larocque sounds out the material, explores its potential, and tests its boundaries. He is recognized as one of the foremost ceramists-sculptors of Canada. His work also includes paintings and engravings. Having shown his work extensively in North America as well as being included in many public and private collections, Larocque was selected to present a major solo exhibition in to inaugurate the new contemporary gallery of the Gardiner Museum of Ceramics in Toronto.
